The first baby born in Olds in 2014 waited until the evening of New Year's Day to make his entry into the world.

Parents Lance and Judy Douglas, along with big sister Jaina, welcomed Jacob Sylvester at the Olds Hospital and Care Centre at 7:51 p.m. on Jan. 1 with the help of Dr. Gert Nel and nurses Sharleen Hazelwood, Layne Gross and Chrystal Comer.

Jacob had decided to take it easy during the holidays, as his due date was Dec. 23.

ìHealthy and happy is really what matters,î Lance said when asked what it meant to him and Judy to have the first baby born at the hospital this year.

And Judy said she was overwhelmed by the community's donations to the annual New Year's Baby Hamper program, which the couple received on Jan. 2.

The hamper included stuffed animals, books, teddy bears and even a silver spoon donated by more than a dozen local businesses.

This is the first year the Mountain View Parent Link Centre, a provincial support program for parents, has handed out the hampers.

The organization took over the hamper program from Xi Alpha Sigma, a local chapter of a global service organization made up of women, which had distributed the hampers since 1997.
