Chinook’s Edge School Division superintendent Kurt Sacher presents students Sage Petersen, Leyton Fazakas and Liam Morgan with $1,500 Julian Charles Arthur Sacher Memorial Scholarships.

OLDS - Three École Olds High School graduates were the recent recipients of scholarships awarded through Chinook's Edge School Division (CESD).

Named after the son of CESD superintendent Kurt Sacher who passed away in 2019, the Julian Sacher Scholarship is awarded annually a student or students who have a strong academic average in Grade 12 diploma-level subjects, are pursuing a degree in science, and show care and concern for the people around them.

Leyton Fazakas, Liam Morgan and Sage Petersen are this school year’s recipients with each receiving $1,500.

“Congratulations to these deserving students,” said superintendent Sacher in a prepared statement. “Each of these individuals embody the characteristics of academic excellence and caring for others. I’m impressed with their achievements to date, and look forward to seeing their success in the future.”

Fazakas is pursuing a bachelor of science degree at the University of Calgary. Math and the sciences were his favourite subjects in high school.

“Once I achieve my degree, I hope to inspire others to pursue mathematics and hope to teach and assist others in sharing my passion,” he says.

Morgan is enrolled at the University of Calgary taking biological sciences. He says he is hoping to attend medical school to become a doctor or medical examiner.

“My body and brain have always interested me. How could I work with both to achieve success in school, sports and in a social community?” Morgan says he is "interested in going to medical school so he can help others."

Petersen is attending Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, taking biology and minoring in psychology.

She says that during high school, “my passion for biology flourished, more specifically the anatomy and physiology of the human body. I find it truly fascinating to learn about how we function and the interconnectedness of all aspects of our bodies.”

Petersen hopes to become a physical therapist.
