A special bench has been installed at the Olds Aquatic Centre to honour a man who provided the single largest donation to help fund the facility.

Lester Woodroe Tribe was born on Oct. 17, 1921 in Olds and spent many years farming and raising black Angus cattle east of the town in the Lone Pine district.

In 1973, Tribe sold his farm and initially moved to Olds before retiring to Armstrong, B.C.

"Tribe, a farmer at heart, grew the biggest variety of roses, (for) which he won many prizes at the Armstong fair," a news release from Olds town officials says.

To help fund the aquatic centre, Tribe gave $193,707.85, the largest single donation received toward the project to create the facility.

Tribe passed away on Nov. 11, 2003.

A legacy bench was designed and created in Tribe's honour "to pay homage to – and in the memory of – Lester Tribe, the man who so graciously donated to our community," the release says.

"Tribe was remembered as a caring man and a true friend and neighbour," the release says. "He was renowned for his great sense of humour and his vast knowledge on any subject."
