OLDS — The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #105 doled out $24,000 to local groups on Friday, March 25.

The vast majority of the money – proceeds from bingo, pull tickets and casinos – went to youth sports. However, money was also given to the Olds & District Hospice Society.

Legion president Tom Bartholow said the money doled out was “right in the ballpark” with amounts the Legion branch has given out in previous years.

However, he said the branch didn’t distribute any money for three or four years due to various issues.

In addition to the Hospice Society, other recipients were École Olds Elementary School, Olds Minor Soccer, Olds Minor Hockey, the École Olds High School football team, the swimming pool to sponsor five swims, the girl guides and boy scouts, Olds and District Special Olympics, Legion youth darts, and lacrosse.

Bartholow said it felt good to be able to distribute money to local organizations again.

“These funds come under the guidelines of the (Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis) which states that these funds are to go back into the community, which we are honoured to do,” a Branch #105 announcement said.
