Olds resident Misty Olsen has been chosen to attend a November 21-23 event to develop athletic leadership and youth activation.

Olsen participates in five-pin bowling, baseball and swimming with Olds & District Special Olympics.

Olsen is also on the 2014-2016 Special Olympics Athlete Leadership Council. She's the Central Alberta representative.

Earlier, on Oct. 30, two 10-pin bowlers and three swimmers from Team Alberta 2014, along with their training coaches, flew to Ontario to join the rest of the Team Canada 2015 swimmers and bowlers for a training camp, which is the beginning of their journey to Los Angeles in July 2015.

The training camp for the athletes is part of the National Team Program, a formalized approach to training and preparation for Special Olympics World Games.

Athletes, coaches and mission staff had access to quality training, coaching and competitive opportunities to support optimal performance as well as a positive experience as a member of the national team.

Aaron Johnson and training coach Karen Mengersen experienced two-and-a-half days of training in the following areas: sport, mental, medical, strength and conditioning, and nutrition.

They also had an afternoon of fitness testing at the Athlete Institute. The next 10 months will be a rewarding journey for these athletes as they prepare to achieve excellence in sport and as ambassadors for Canada at the World Games in Los Angeles.

Highlights of the weekend for Aaron were the Halloween party and dance on Saturday evening (there always has to be a dance) and the chance to bowl with Rick Mercer from CBC, who came to learn more about Team Canada and their aspirations for the World Games.
