The Duke of Edinburgh award goes to youth age 14-24 who have completed a rigorous leadership and self-development program. The international award was created by Prince Philip in 1956 and established in Canada in 1963.

The program contains bronze, silver and gold levels. Participants must learn new skills, achieve physical fitness, go on an adventurous journey and – to obtain the gold award – participate in a residential project.

"Kimberly Rieberger has been an active member in her community for most for her life. She loves sports, volunteering, and trying new things," a release from Non Profit News says.

"The Duke of Edinburgh program fit into her already active lifestyle and motivated her to become further involved in her community.

"Kimberly’s participation in the Award, the Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron and her countless volunteer hours in both programs have been a huge influence in developing her love of helping others.

"This, along with her love of sports have led her to what she believes to be one of her biggest accomplishments: having a positive impact in the lives of young girls through her time as their basketball coach.

"Kimberly acquired many skills necessary for this through her time in the Duke of Edinburgh program and she plans to continue using them wherever the future leads her."
