The medium security unit at Bowden Institution is under lockdown while staff members conduct an "exceptional" search.
Prison officials said the lockdown was put in place at about 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 5.
The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates, said officials in a media release. The release added normal operations will resume as soon as it's considered safe to do so.
Prison officials added visits at the institution have been suspended until the search is completed.
"The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is committed to preventing the entry of contraband into its institutions. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions, a CSC news release says.
