Lots of paving work still to be done

It's going to be a busy summer in Olds for pavers as they complete about $2.4-million worth of paving projects in the community, authorized by the town. That includes engineering, geotechnical work and construction.

It's going to be a busy summer in Olds for pavers as they complete about $2.4-million worth of paving projects in the community, authorized by the town.

That includes engineering, geotechnical work and construction.

Within a few weeks, paving contractors are expected to begin work on rebuilding 70th Avenue.

Director of operations Scott Chant says that work will stretch from the southern edge of town north past the new Rotary Athletic Park, which is currently under construction south of the waste transfer station.

Concrete work for the access road to the athletic park was completed a few weeks ago. Plans called for that road to be paved as well.

Chant says a road is being constructed in the southeast industrial park, where marijuana processing facilities and other new businesses are locating.

The road, which Chant says will be known as 48th Avenue, goes directly south, past the cemetery, between the feed mill and Premier Horticulture.

"It probably will not be paved this year. But you'll start to see a defined road going in later this year, complete with getting it up to a gravel state. But they probably won't get it to a paved state until possibly next year," he says.

"Everything in the southeast industrial area right now is being done by developers," he adds. "The town has done the engineering, but the developers are hiring the contractors and the town will supervise construction."

The repaving of 57th Avenue, completed last month, was just one example of this year's projects.

Workers there had their challenges.

Rain slowed them down.

"It basically put them behind a week for wanting to do a job here," Chant says.

He says the goal is to have all paving work done in town this year by the beginning of October.
