OLDS — At a property owner’s request, two pieces of land in Olds’ southeast industrial park have been redesignated from marijuana production-only to light industrial in the hope those properties can be more easily sold.

The two pieces of land are located on either side of 48th Avenue where it meets 68th Street. Specifically, the addresses of the two parcels are 6608 48th Ave. and 4607 68th St.

Surrounding land owners and others with an interest in the area were contacted about the proposal and none objected to the plan.

When the proposal came up during a public hearing in August, no one objected in person either, so the public hearing was closed and council voted to make the land use change.

Earlier, both pieces of land were designated Direct Control 7 (DC-7). The only use allowed on land with that designation is medical and/or recreational cannabis development or distribution facilities.

As he presented the proposal, Craig Teal of Parkland Community Planning Services noted the requested change fits with the area structure plan for the industrial park.

Teal said the requested change would allow light industrial, manufacturing, warehousing, storage which would “give a much broader range of uses” for the properties.

Combined, the public hearing and council’s final approval of the change took about four minutes.

The bylaw to make the change received first reading June 13. Time was then given for the proposal to be advertised before final approval was contemplated.
