The Olds RCMP have charged the owner of a Jeep that ended up in the way of a fire truck responding to a shop building fire west of Olds on the morning of Jan. 9 with failing to yield to an emergency vehicle under the Traffic Safety Act.

Emergency crews from Olds, Sundre and Didsbury responded to the blaze at the Olds Contracting Ltd. site on Rge. Rd. 23 and at one point a fire truck that was approaching the fire scene became stuck in a snowbank after a motorist in a white Jeep who had come to see the fire ended up in the truck’s way.

The Jeep’s driver was trying to turn around on the roadway and when the fire truck sounded its sirens, the Jeep attempted to reverse.

The fire truck was coming down a hill on a slippery snow-packed surface and narrowly missed hitting the Jeep before ending up in the snowbank.

Police said the Olds Fire Department alerted them to the incident and the Jeep was eventually found.

The charge comes with a voluntary fine of $172.

Police are reminding the public to give emergency vehicles the right-of-way and to stop if the vehicle is sounding its sirens.

Chief Lorne Thompson of the Olds Fire Department said an investigation into the cause of the fire is wrapping up but there was not enough evidence to make a determination on a cause.

He added the fire did start in a mechanical room in the shop building that burned down and the blaze was not suspicious.
