OLDS — Town council is considering a proposal to allow a company to create cannabis products in an industrial area at the north end of Olds.

The facility would operate out of two lots at the corner of Highway 2A and 43rd Street.

The company, Seep Cannabis, would not grow marijuana itself, but would receive the plant and turn it into “cannabis products such as infused oils and treats for recreational use,” a town document says.

A public hearing has been scheduled for Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. in council chambers regarding changes to a town bylaw that would be necessary, if the proposed use is approved.

“Seep Cannabis is interested in leasing two lots on the subject property in order to operate a cannabis production and distribution use,” a request for decision in the town’s Jan. 23 agenda says.

“The proposed facility will create cannabis products such as infused oils and treats for recreational use.

“There will be no growing operations out of this facility, as marijuana will be delivered to the site and processed into goods.

“The finished products will be sold in bulk to licensed handlers and agencies such as the provincial government. Goods will not be sold to individual customers for personal use.

“There will be no heavy machinery on site to create noise concerns, and filters will be installed in the ventilation system to eliminate odours.”

Land for a cannabis production and distribution facility must be rezoned to DC7, hence the need for bylaws to make that change.

If the change goes ahead, the area would be rezoned from Light lndustrial District (11) to Direct Control District 7 (DC7).

The request for decision says the proposed bylaws to enable the land use change will be advertised in order to enable members of the public to comment on the matter.

Letters will also be sent to adjacent landowners and the proposed bylaws will be “circulated to referral agencies for comment,” the document says.

Administrative staff will provide “a more detailed report” on the proposal at the time of the public hearing, council was told.
