OLDS — The town had hoped to hire a finance intern, but due to a “low amount of resumés,” had to drop out of the program, finance director Sheena Linderman says.

During council’s Aug. 28 council meeting, Linderman said they’ll try again next year.

She said the 18-month position was included in the town’s budget, with funds coming via the province’s Municipal Affairs department.

“We were unable to hire a suitable candidate and had to withdraw from the program,” Linderman said.

A couple of councillors indicated some surprise at that fact.

“I’m always finding it hard to believe that there’s so many people looking for work but we can’t find people to fill positions,” Coun. James Cummings said.

He surmised that potential candidates didn’t apply directly to the town but rather to an intermediary. Linderman confirmed that fact.

She said they also have to meet certain criteria.

The Municipal Affairs website says the program accepts applicants in the finance officer stream who have a diploma in accounting or finance, a degree with either a major in accounting or finance, or a business-related degree with a minor in accounting.
