OLDS — A couple living in the Seasons Olds retirement facility have celebrated their 60th anniversary.
Mel and Bonnie Giles first met in August 1960 on the shore of Lake Champlain in Vermont.
Introduced by mutual friends, their first date was to watch a drive-in movie, “a special detail that speaks to the era in which their love blossomed,” a news release issued on behalf of Seasons Olds says.
“Despite the 60-mile distance between Bonnie's home in Vermont and Mel's in Montreal, their romance thrived through weekly love letters and occasional visits across the seasons,” the release adds.
They were married on June 13, 1964, at 19 and 21 respectively.
“Their three children were raised with the values of trustworthiness, responsibility, and respect, a legacy that is now reflected in their grandchildren,” the release says.
"We are incredibly honoured to celebrate Mel and Bonnie Giles' 60th wedding anniversary as they share such a special love story," Seasons Olds general manager Liberty Poon is quoted as saying in the release.
"It's not just the longevity of their marriage that impresses us; it's their vibrant, joyful approach to life. They're always quick with a laugh and a loving word."
“Mel and Bonnie believe the secret to a successful marriage lies in mutual respect and understanding,” the release says.
“They emphasize never going to bed angry, prioritizing communication, and always striving to understand each other's feelings.
“Now settled living in Seasons Olds, Mel and Bonnie cherish their serene surroundings overlooking the gardens. They find joy in observing the local wildlife and the simple beauty of nature right from their home.
“Their story is a beautiful reminder of the enduring power of love and the simple joys that come from a life well-lived together.”
