Olds now has an official policy on how town facilities should be named.At a meeting on June 23, council voted to adopt a policy that would formalize the process of naming town properties.Prior to the decision, Olds followed guidelines established by an advisory committee 14 years ago, said Doug Wagstaff, the town's director of community services.“So this policy now puts into place a means that we can tell developers in the community how we're going to be looking at naming public spaces in common areas,” Wagstaff said.According to Wagstaff, the process starts when the community submits recommended names for a facility to town administration for review. That list would be presented to council on a quarterly basis, as needed.“It really doesn't change what we're doing. It just formalizes it, puts it into policy so that everybody knows ahead of time.”To be considered, a person's name must meet one of several criteria under the policy.That person could be: an original inhabitant of the Olds area; a citizen who “demonstrates excellence, courage or exceptional dedication to service” that benefits the town, province or country; a volunteer who “gives extraordinary help”; a person who risks his or her life to protect others; or a person who achieves excellence in an [email protected]
