An Olds father has been arrested for alleged sex crimes against his own daughter.

The 32-year-old man is alleged to have sexually assaulted his three-year-old daughter and made child pornography involving her as well as other offences, according to the ALERT Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit.

The man was first arrested Jan. 4 with help from Olds RCMP, then arrested again Jan. 13. He remains in custody, pending a Jan. 19 court appearance.

ALERT did not release the name of the suspect in order to protect the child's identity. A news release says the child is receiving help from "a variety of support services."

The charges were announced Thursday, Jan. 18.

ALERT says during the Jan. 4 arrest, "a number of computers and electronic devices were seized."

"It was during the forensic examination that an ICE digital forensic examiner noted photos that appeared to show the suspect's daughter being sexually assaulted."

The man was arrested again on Jan. 13, at which time further charges were laid.

Charges against the accused include:

sexual assault

sexual interference

sexual exploitation

making child pornography

possessing child pornography

accessing child pornography

distributing child pornography

"The investigation began last October after the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children provided information about an Alberta-based suspect sharing child pornography via social media," ALERT says. "It is not believed that photos of his daughter were distributed online."

ALERT is a combined group to tackle serious and organized crime. It's comprised of people from various police services around the province, including RCMP.
