OLDS — Council has declared the week of Oct. 9 -15 Fire Prevention Week in the town.

Council approved that declaration during its Sept. 26 meeting.

As has been the custom, the Olds Fire Department will be holding an open house at the department's fire hall as part of the week’s activities.

This year’s open house occurs Oct. 12 from 6-8 p.m.

Protective services director and Olds Fire Department Chief Justin Andrew expressed hope that this year, firefighters will get a chance to see more residents.

That was a challenge when COVID-19 restrictions were in place.

“Hopefully this year we can be out in the public and open our doors once again to the public for our annual open house,” Andrew said as he requested that the proclamation be issued.

A request for decision (RFD) prepared by Town of Olds staff noted that this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape.”

The theme “promotes a message that can mean the difference between life and death in a fire,” the RFD said.

“Having a home fire escape plan and practicing it regularly ensures that everyone in the household knows what to do when they hear the smoke alarm,” it added.
