Olds High School teacher Angie Dezall has won an Alberta Education Excellence in Teaching award.

Dezall, who has been teaching at OHS for 20 years, is one of 20 teachers across the province who have received the award.

“These are considered highly prestigious awards and we are very proud to have Ms. Dezall recognized by Alberta Education with this honour,” said Chinook's Edge School Division (CESD) chair Colleen Butler.

“I know she is highly regarded for the strong connections she makes with her students, which encourages them to flourish in her classroom. She is determined to make her math lessons interactive and fun-filled, and her students report that they enjoy her energy and enthusiasm.

“We know we have highly skilled teachers in Chinook's Edge, and we are pleased that Alberta Education has recognized the calibre of Angie Dezall's teaching in particular. She is a strong teacher with a positive influence well beyond her school.”

At OHS, Dezall is known for creating a strong rapport with students that builds their confidence in courses that involve complexity and challenges.

She also supports students outside the classroom, through ongoing individual tutorial sessions and at extracurricular activities.

She was quick to respond when the Chinook's Edge board and leadership team invited teachers from throughout the division to help launch the inaugural Teachers Matter Committee five years ago.

“She was a tremendous asset to us getting the Teachers Matter Committee rolling, with her insight into what teachers face and her high expectations of her role in student success,” said CESD superintendent Kurt Sacher.

“What stands out for me most strongly is that Angie is a school teacher – she's as concerned about the kids down the hall as she is about the kids in her class. She is a highly positive influence at Olds High School, and she lends a thoughtful and caring voice to the work of our division.

“In the end, her students consistently achieve very high grades on provincial assessments. I'm very pleased she is being honoured with an Excellence in Teaching award.”

Award recipients are honoured at a dinner reception and awards presentation with the Alberta Education ministry, along with $4,000 for professional development opportunities.
