OLDS – After responding to a request from Edmonton police to locate a missing 13-year-old girl, Olds RCMP have arrested a local adult man on sexual assault and abduction charges.
The child was ultimately found by Mounties hiding under a stairway.
RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney said Olds RCMP went into action on April 21 following a report from the Edmonton Police Service that the missing female youth might be in the Central Alberta town.
Slaney said Olds RCMP officers attended a possible location for the girl and the door was opened partially by an unknown male.
She said the male confirmed the girl was in the residence but refused police entry to “ensure she was ok.
“Fearing for the youth’s safety officers detained the male and entered the residence,” said Slaney. “Officers located the youth hiding under a stairway.”
She said Dean Humphrey, 34, a resident of Olds, has been charged with the following Criminal Code offences:
• luring a child;
• child abduction;
• sexual interference;
• sexual assault;
• unsafe storage of firearms; and
• possession of a firearm at an unauthorized place.
Slaney said on April 22 Olds RCMP completed a search warrant for the residence where the youth was located.
She said evidence was located that supported the charges.
Slaney said on April 30 Olds RCMP executed a second search warrant at the residence, which resulted in the two firearms offences.
She said on April 22 Humphrey faced his first judicial interim release (bail) hearing and was remanded into custody.
At his next judicial appearance on May 1, Humphrey was released with conditions to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury on May 15.
Slaney said no further information will be provided as the alleged victim is a youth.
