OLDS - An Olds man has been handed a four-year prison sentence for sexual interference with a person under the age of 16 years, court officials said.
Dean Humphrey, 35, was sentenced in Calgary Court of Justice on Dec. 4 after being convicted of the charge under Section 151 of the Criminal Code.
Olds RCMP arrested the accused in May 2023 on sexual assault and abduction charges after police found a 13-year-old girl in a residence in the town.
“Fearing for the youth’s safety, officers detained the male and entered the residence,” RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney said at the time of the arrest. “Officers located the youth hiding under a stairway.”
Section 151 of the Criminal Code “makes it an offence for any person to touch, directly or indirectly, any part of the body of a person under the age of 16 years for a sexual purpose.”
The Crown withdrew charges against the accused of abduct person under 14, luring a child and sexual assault.
Justice J.D. Bascom recommended that Humphrey serve his four-year sentence in the Bowden Institution and for him to receive psychiatric treatment during his incarceration, court officials said.
Humphrey was also handed a firearms prohibition and ordered to have no contact with the complainant, who cannot be named.
