OLDS — At the beginning of the Town of Olds council meeting today, March 27, mayor Judy Dahl paid tribute to two slain Edmonton police officers who were laid to rest after a regimental funeral today.
Constables Brett Ryan and Travis Jordan were shot and killed on March 16 by a 16-year-old boy while responding to a domestic disturbance. Police say the boy killed himself after a tussle during which he severely injured his mother.
A regimental funeral was held for Ryan and Jordan at Rogers Place in Edmonton on March 27.
In addition to Edmonton police, officers from across the province, around the country and even the U.S. attended the funeral.
Several dignitaries also attended, including Premier Danielle Smith, Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis, Opposition Leader Rachel Notley, Edmonton mayor Amarjeet Sohi and federal Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino.
“Every day, police officers put their lives at risk to help and protect the public,” Dahl said. “Every day, the families of police officers send their loved ones off to work and hope they return safely.”
She added, “on behalf of all my council colleagues, administration, as well as the town of Olds community, our condolences go out to the families and loved ones of Const. Brett Ryan and Const. Travis Jordan.”
