OLDS — Mayor Michael Muzychka heaped praise on the five female members of town council as he opened the council meeting on March 8, which was also International Women’s Day.
“We’ve made the proclamation already, but a big day for celebration, as our heritage advisor told us a little while back that this is the 100th year of sort of the first unofficial International Women’s Day, so a very big milestone there,” Muzcyhka said.
“And on a personal note, I would like to acknowledge the five incredibly, strong, smart, well-prepared and incredibly ethical women on this council. They’re somewhat opinionated as well in that list of acknowledgements.
“But I do have to say I’ve worked in a number of industries in my life and with some amazing people and this council has certainly the most amazing set of people that I’ve ever worked with.
“I don’t know if too many people understand, but five out of seven being very strong women, this council is a beacon for Alberta, Canada and dare I say North America.
“All the work that you’ve done ladies over the last three-and-a-half years, it’s been a pleasure working with you,” he added.
Council members include the mayor, Debbie Bennett, Wanda Blatz, Mary Jane Harper, Mary Anne Overwater, Heather Ryan and Mitch Thomson.
Several female councillors thanked Muzychka for his words.
