OLDS — Now that the weather is warmer and a bit drier, Olds RCMP have seen a slight increase in theft from residential and commercial properties, so they’re urging residents to lock up their premises and vehicles.
“In the past month or so, we have seen a slight increase in theft from residential and commercial property," Staff Sgt. Warren Wright wrote in an email.
“In most cases, items were taken from within vehicles, garages and out-buildings which were left unlocked.”
Wright suspects the change in the weather is a factor in those thefts.
“I would say the recent warmer spring temperatures are making it more appealing for thieves to venture outside and see what’s left unlocked, open and is easy to steal,” he wrote.
Wright listed some tried and true ways to prevent thieves from stealing – or at least make it less appealing for them to try.
“We strongly encourage owners to secure their property items by locking it up,” Wright wrote.
“Further, installing motion lights or fixed lights to illuminate their property at night will help. Lastly, don’t forget to report your theft to the local RCMP.”
