Olds resident arrested; faces 63 charges

An Olds resident was scheduled to appear in provincial court in Didsbury Friday by closed-circuit TV to face 63 charges ranging from vehicle theft to fraud and forgery.

Morgan Stephen Winter was arrested by members of the Southern Alberta Crime Reduction Team (SACRT) on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

Winter was wanted in connection with offences from Olds, Innisfail and Didsbury as well as Calgary Police Service.

He was wanted for two counts of vehicle theft, one count of possession of identity documents, one count of driving while prohibited, five counts of identity fraud and five counts of identity theft, five counts of fraud under $5,000, two counts of fraud over $5,000, eight counts of forgery, nine counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000, seven counts of failing to appear in court, 10 counts of uttering a forged document, one count of obstructing police, one count of possession of stolen property and seven counts of breaching probation.

After his arrest, Winter was held in custody pending his Feb. 16 court appearance.

SACRT is a newly formed team of RCMP officers whose mandate is to target known offenders and reduce crime in southern Alberta.

"SACRT is an intelligence lead unit that will identify those criminals who have the biggest impact on communities and work towards the disruption of their ongoing criminal activity," a news release says.

"The unit is committed to increased inter-agency communication, shared criminal intelligence and a strategic focus on repeat property crime offenders, in keeping with the (RCMP's) K Division emphasis on crime reduction strategies."
