OLDS – A Olds man is facing 18 charges, including related to the placement of a homemade explosive device outside an Olds business last fall, following his arrest Monday, police say.

Shannon Roy Hillman, 38, was arrested at his Olds’ residence Aug. 24 after police used video surveillance to identify a suspect in a weekend break and enter at a business located on Imperial Way, said RCMP Staff Sgt. Jim MacDonald.

Items stolen in the break-in included welding equipment and several tools, all valued at about $7,000. The items were recovered at the accused’s residence, he said.

He has been charged with break and enter to a business, theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

Police are not identifying the business.

As well as the charges related to the weekend break-in, Hillman was also arrested on 15 outstanding arrest warrants for offences related to domestic violence, theft, and failing to attend court.

“One of the warrants executed was in relation to Hillman’s placement of a homemade explosive device outside an Olds business last October,” said MacDonald.

The device was ignited but did not explode, he said.

Hillman is facing a charge under Criminal Code Section 81 (1)(c) which reads: “Everyone commits and offence who with intent to destroy or damage property without lawful excuse, places or throws an explosive substance anywhere.”

He has been remanded in custody and is set to appear in Airdrie provincial court on Thursday.

Anyone with information related to the break and enter is being asked to contact Olds RCMP, any other RCMP detachment, or Crime Stoppers.
