OLDS — This summer, the outdoor rink created in Centennial Park will become a pickleball court.

It will revert back to a skating rink in the winter.

Community services director Doug Wagstaff says this spring, lines will be etched for four pickleball courts.

That work, along with some finishing around the boards and final landscaping, is expected to be completed by the end of June.

Coun. Wanda Blatz asked Wagstaff for an update on the pickleball courts during council’s April policies and priorities meeting.

“I understand pickleball’s becoming quite a successful sport and many people are anticipating and looking forward to its usage,” she said.

Wagstaff said one of the biggest challenges in making the transition to the courts has been Mother Nature.

“We have a number of weeks before we’re even going to be able to do anything outside, so that’s going to be our biggest challenge,” he said.
