BOWDEN -- Olds RCMP have asked local municipalities for their priorities on policing in their communities.

During their April 8 meeting Bowden councillors had a quick answer: more policing of Highway 587, especially near the cemetery.

"They need to sit there. They'd make a mint," Coun. Sandy Gamble said with a laugh."A mint."

Coun. Carol Pion said she'd also like to see more policing in Bowden itself.

Gamble said she saw a police vehicle driving around the community that day.

"Good, " said Pion.

Councillors also expressed the need to ensure safety in school zones.

Staff Sgt. Jim MacDonald, the commanding officer of Olds RCMP, says after obtaining input from community representatives, the agreed-upon goals this year are to:

* Reduce property crime.

* Increase traffic safety — especially regarding speed, pedestrian safety and distracted driving.

* Build and maintain positive relations between police and community, and support RCMP employee wellness.

"The stakeholder participation was very good, generating a robust conversation surrounding many aspects of policing in the Olds area," MacDonald said in an email to the Albertan.
