A public hearing has been set for September regarding two bylaws that outline proposed rules and regulations for selling cannabis (marijuana) in Olds.

That public hearing has been set for Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. in the council chambers.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently announced that recreational marijuana would be legal as of Oct. 17 and council says it's on track to meet that deadline.

The latest discussion in council was in regard to the distance that cannabis retail stores have to be from health facilities and schools.

There were no concrete decisions made about what to do because councillors like Mary Jane Harper believe public input is important for an issue like this.

“We should not be putting to the public what council thinks at this time," Harper said.

“We should be asking the public what they think at this time and have them make suggestions. I find it’s up to the public to provide that information to us.”

At council's last policies and priorities meeting, it was mentioned that the town would seek public input before the Sept. 10 public hearing.
