OLDS — The period from Dec. 24 to Jan. 2 was “relatively quiet and uneventful,” in Olds and area says Staff Sgt. Warren Wright, the commanding officer of the Olds RCMP detachment.

Several vehicle collisions were reported to police during that period, but only two resulted in injuries.

One of those injury incidents occurred on Highway 27, east of the overpass towards Torrington. The other occurred on Highway 2 north of Olds towards Bowden.

In both cases, the driver and occupants were taken to the hospital.

Wright said black ice and road conditions were listed as a contributing factors in all those collisions.

During the Christmas to New Year’s period, would-be thieves prowled properties and vehicles apparently with a view to theft. One attempt was made to steal a vehicle.

“People are encouraged to lock their vehicles and stow away belongings. That would be the best advice for loss prevention,” Wright said.

The message not to drive after drinking alcohol or consuming drugs seems to have had an effect.

Wright said during the holiday period, Olds RCMP were out making sure drivers were not impaired and were following laws.

They only encountered one person who was deemed over the legal limit.

Wright said that person was hit with immediate road sanctions.  The  Immediate Roadside Sanctions Program is administered under section 88.1 of the Traffic Safety Act.

Wright said overall, the number of calls the Olds RCMP detachment received from Dec. 24 to Jan. 2 was on par with that same period a year ago.
