Recycling will continue despite lack of markets

The Town of Olds will continue to operate its recycling program, even though there's currently little or no market for the product, Mayor Mike Muzychka says.

Muzychka made that statement during an Olds town council meeting.

He said the town is taking that position on the advice of Mountain View Regional Waste Management Commission chief administrative officer Michael Wueatherick.

Muzychka said during a meeting, Wueatherick gave an update on recycling not only in Mountain View County, but around the world.

"He reminded us that recycling is a commodity and like many commodities, the price fluctuates rapidly and — I don't like the word violently, but sadly in that space, that's probably the word for it," Muzychka said.

"There's very little market for the recycling programs, but Mr. Wueatherick's message to us was stay the course. Let's keep doing recycling because one never knows when the markets are going to open up and there will be a market for that — for those products. So we'll keep doing that here in the town of Olds" he added.

"Other municipalities have shut down their blue bin projects and we just feel that if we shut it down, to start it back up will be much more costly than staying the course right now and waiting until the market bounces back up."
