A public hearing will be held next month for a bylaw which could make it tougher for some Olds residents to access their garages, a councillor fears.

The bylaw pertains to a proposed road closure on 57th Street. The move is tied directly to the Highlands Area Structure Plan Phase 6.

The public hearing will be held Monday July 9 at 9 a.m. in council chambers. Those affected by the proposed bylaw as well as other residents can come to council to voice their concern or support.

The road proposed to be closed is technically an alley and closing it would make it so residents wouldn’t be able to access their garages. This is an issue that Coun. Mary Jane Harper pointed out during the initial reading of the bylaw.

“That’s the only way they can access their garages right now, so if we close that alley how are people supposed to access their garages?” she asked.

The bylaw was given first reading during a council meeting May 28. That step was necessary before the public hearing could occur.

In order for the bylaw to go through it would have to pass second and third reading and that can’t happen until after the public hearing.

If town council passes the bylaw, it would have to be submitted to Land Titles, with a request that a title be issued for the property. That title will automatically be in the name of the municipality.

This would allow decisions to be made for long-term use and potential disposal of all or portions of the closed road.
