OLDS — For the second year in a row, a dodgeball tournament will be held at the Olds College of Agriculture & Technology (OCAT).
The event, organized by students in the college’s sports management class, will be held Nov. 30 in the Frank Grisdale Hall gym from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Last year, the tournament raised money for the Gay Straight Alliance at the college.
This year, proceeds will go to Movember, which encourages men to grow mustaches with donations going toward men’s health.
Maeve Van’t Klooster, one of the tournament’s organizers, says work on this year’s event began back in mid-October.
It’s envisioned as an eight-team tournament, like last year’s edition, but Van’t Klooster says if they get enough interest, it could become a 12-team event.
She said organizers hope to attract participants and spectators from beyond college students to the whole community, including the adjacent École Olds High School.
Organization of the tournament is a chance for the students to take what they’ve learned in class and apply those skills to organizing an actual sporting event.
“We are piggybacking really a lot off of the one last year,” Van’t Klooster said during an interview with the Albertan. “We’re doing our own little things as well as well as different sponsors.
“We’ve reached out to multiple different companies and everything like that in Red Deer as well as in town here so that people are able to even do draw prizes and things like that.”
