The Community Learning Campus fitness centre will be hosting a series of senior circuit and social events beginning in January.

From Jan. 17 to Feb. 16, seniors can drop by the fitness centre from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“Basically, it includes an instructed session for seniors that works on improving their strength, flexibility, balance and overall body condition. All our activities that we do within these sessions are low impact, and we really try and cater each workout … for seniors specifically and specifically to reach their goals,” said Brittany Ehmann, programmer at the CLC fitness centre.

Following each of the sessions, there is a social that includes coffee and a light snack.

“Really, what we're trying to accomplish with this is get people active (and have) fun, but also include that social aspect,” she said, noting during the winter, this is a good way to get seniors physically active without having to go outside.

Ehmann said because winter can be a time when people – especially seniors – find it difficult to get out and about, this is a good way to promote exercise and health.

“We offer the opportunity for them to come into our facility, have somebody instruct them, give them the resources and give them the opportunity to get active in a safe environment and also the opportunity to have fun while they're doing it. Having fun is what keeps you motivated and keeps you doing it,” she said.

Ehmann said the fitness centre already hosted a similar session from November through the early part of this month, with great success. About 20 participants came out for those sessions and Ehmann said she hopes about that number participate again.

The fitness centre would like to continue with a couple more intakes after February, until summer, and then start it up again next fall.
