OLDS — The week of Sept. 19-25 was Public Rail Safety Week in Olds.

Town council approved a proclamation to that effect during its Sept. 12 meeting.

During the week across the country, Operation Lifesaver (OL) Canada, in partnership with HUB Surface Systems, worked with the rail industry, governments, police services, the news media, community groups, and public to raise rail safety awareness around railway property.

Specifically, the Town of Olds' proclamation says: “Whereas it is in the public’s interest to raise citizen’s awareness on reducing avoidable accidents, injuries and damage caused by collisions at rail crossing or incidents involving trains and citizens; and

“Whereas Operation Lifesaver is a public/private partnership whose aim is to work with the rail industry, governments, police services, the media and other agencies and public to raise rail safety awareness; and

“Whereas Public Rail Safety Week is recognized across Canada from Sept.19-25,

“Now therefore, Olds Town Council, Olds, Alberta, do hereby Proclaim Sept. 19 to Sept. 25 as Public Rail Safety Week in the Town of Olds and encourage local residents to participate in rail safety education to help prevent tragedy.”

Mayor Judy Dahl described organizers of activities during the week as "good people doing good things.”
