Mayor Mike Muzychka has declared Sept. 30 as Orange Shirt Day in Olds.

That proclamation was made during a council's earlier this month.

The first Orange Shirt Day came about in 2013 when residential school survivor Phyllis (Jack) Webstad talked about how her new orange shirt had been taken away during her first day of school at the St. Joseph Mission in  Williams Lake, B.C.

Since then Orange Shirt Day has become an opportunity to highlight the impact that residential schools had on students and their families.

Sept. 30 was chosen as the date for the commemoration because that's the time of year when children were taken from their homes to residential schools

"It is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. lt also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations," a document in council's agenda said.

"Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, Metis and lnuit peoples, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come," it added.

Attachments on council's agenda included a poster for the film The Grizzlies,  a 2018 Canadian sports drama film. It's based on the true story of a youth lacrosse team that was created to help combat an epidemic of youth suicide in Kugluktuk, Nunavut.

That film will be shown at the TransCanada Theatre as part of Orange Shirt Day observances on Sept. 30.
