Town of Olds council passed a bylaw at its regular meeting last week to close a portion of the service road along the south side of Highway 27 between 65 Avenue and 70 Avenue.
The bylaw was given first reading in April 2010. However, Alberta Transportation only recently approved the bylaw.
It has been Alberta Transportation's functional plan for Highway 27 to close the existing service road along the south edge and create a rear service road leading to the No Frills property. The rear service road had to be in place before Alberta Transportation would approve the road closure bylaw.
“This is the next step in a long, long process. We have been involved with Mountain View Credit Union and Alberta Transportation with regards to the consolidation and construction of the new financial facility at the corner of 65 Avenue and Highway 27,” said Larry Wright, director of operational services for the town.
“Part of the process that was agreed upon some time ago, based on submissions, was that we would close a service road that existed in the past and we would follow the functional plan provided by Alberta Transportation to council.”
As the bylaw was approved, it will be submitted to Land Titles to remove the road designation and issue title as a fee simple parcel in the town's name.
The passing of the road closure bylaw is step number three, out of five steps.
“The next step is the segment of area adjacent to the Mountain View Credit Union property. We will be bringing back documentation on the trade once the property is registered with the town,” said Wright.
“Then, we will be looking at another component as development proceeds.”
