The number of building permits issued by the Town of Olds during the first six months of this year is down from the same period a year ago, but the total value of all permits issued so far is more than double last year's figures at this time.
That's thanks to one permit valued at $13,400,000 issued in March under the industrial category for Phase 2 of Sundial Growers' facilities, under construction in the Southeast Industrial Park.
As a result, a total of 46 building permits have been issued as of the end of June for projects worth a total of $19,002,800. At the end of June 2017, a total of 55 permits had been issued for projects worth a total of $5,775,572.
June this year was a pretty good month for the town, according to development officer Carey Keleman.
A total of 11 building permits were approved for projects worth a total of $1,636,100. In June 2017, eight permits were issued for work worth a total of $600,500.
During a Municipal Planning Commission meeting earlier this month, Keleman said factors in June's numbers this year include a $400,000 project to add two modular classrooms to Holy Trinity Catholic School, $450,000 worth of renovations to No Frills, and a $225,000 project to convert a home on the Olds College campus to office space.
Also during June this year, one permit was issued for a single detached home with garage estimated to be worth a total of $310,000.
Three permits were issued for garages ranging in value from $11,000 to $42,000, along with one permit to convert an existing carport into a garage for $4,000.
"So moving to the year-end, where we're at: month-end stats within the year, we're at $19 million, which is pretty good, compared to where we were last year at this time," Keleman said.
