More than 150 Chinook's Edge students participated in the Mountainview Science and Technology Fair at Olds High School last Saturday.
In total, 110 projects were displayed in the school's commons.
The organizers were happy with the number of participants and the quality of the projects.
"The quality of the projects is just phenomenal. The judges have all made that comment,î said Ruth Roedler, fair organizer and judge.
"It seems to have gone very well. We are very pleased with it.î
Grades 5 to 12 students competed for medals, which enables them to go to the next level ñ the Central Alberta Science Fair. They were judged on their scientific knowledge, their displays and their scientific procedures.
For his last fair participation, Olds High School Grade 12 student Tim Carlielle designed a new transportation system that he called the Ski-Breeze.
"It basically pushes you along over the snow on skis,î said Carlielle.
"You wear skis and it has a little track and it pushes you forward.î
Carlielle has been a regular fair participant, having started in Grade 1.
"It is a great experience to investigate something I am interested in. At the same time, it helps me to meet other people,î he said.
"I get a chance to present my projects and work on my presentation skills.î
For the past six years, Carlielle has also gone on to the National Science Fair with his projects.
"They offer some great cash prizes and scholarships,î he said.
"It is a weeklong event that is a lot of fun.î
Olds Koinonia Christian School Grade 5 student Rachael Rieberger made her first fair appearance with a project on how to make glowing water with highlighter ink.
"I went online and I looked up a bunch of science projects,î said Rieberger.
"I thought that it was interesting.î
The Central Alberta Science Fair will be held at Bower Place in Red Deer on March 30 and 31.
