Sundial Growers is still on track to let all job applicants who applied during their first job fair know their status by the end of this month, chief executive officer Torsten Kuenzlen says.

"That is still the case. In fact, many of them are hearing before. We've already hired quite a few, because obviously we need to bring people on before we can train them and then have them ready before we start growing," Kuenzlen said during an interview with the Albertan June 6.

"So yeah, many have already been employed and all the others that applied -- over 300 -- we're very fortunate that we had a positive response from the employee community and they will all hear from us before the end of the month."

Kuenzlen also said age is not expected to be a barrier for those who did apply.

It was noted that during the job fair held May 23 at the Pomeroy Inn & Suites, there were not that many 20-year-olds and 30-year-olds. Many -- if not most -- were in their 40s, 50s and up.

Kuenzlen was asked if the age of those older applicants would be an issue.

"None at all. We fully embrace diversity," Kuenzlen said.

"We're excited. It was actually a bit of a surprise to us how many older employees were applying from Olds. We have so many different positions and the jobs are somewhat physical, but not in a way that they exclude anybody. So we're really comfortable and looking forward to having a very diverse employee community here.

"(It's) very similar to the user community," he added. "I think there's a bit of a misperception that cannabis as an industry is a young people's industry and in many ways it's not. It really goes across all age groups and demographics."
