The town is negotiating with Mountain View County over a piece of property north of Highway 27 on 70 Avenue where the town wants to develop a dog park.
The town wants to develop four hectares of fenced area initially and expand it to 12 hectares as the population of the town – and the number of dogs – grows. Town officials say the dog park would be a good recreational addition to the town’s facilities, as it would also have walking trails that eventually connect to other trails already in the community. The town, the Olds Rotary Club and Alberta Transportation are collaborating on the project.
Mayor Judy Dahl said last week that negotiations are ongoing with the county over permit fees and other issues related to the land. She added the Rotary Club has also agreed to build trails in the park that would make access to the park for people much easier.
"It’s really coming together as a huge collaboration of partners. It’s a location that’s going to be extremely beneficial to travellers on Highway 27 as well as town users. People can drive out there and I see it enhancing (the community)," she said, adding that work is continuing to have the area open for dogs and their owners by sometime in 2014.
Dahl said town officials are excited about the park as it will add to community facilities that already exist and will represent another milestone in the growth of the community. But she stressed there is much work yet to be done.
"We’re still in the planning stages, but it is going to be the designated site," she said.
