OLDS — Town council has voted to provide a $1,000 sponsorship to help cover costs for concerts for school children, part of the Olds Kiwanis 2022-23 concert series.
Council made that decision during its Sept. 26 meeting at the request of Olds Kiwanis Performing Arts Society president Rita Thompson.
In a letter to the town’s community services department, Thompson noted that plans call for three outreach concerts to be held this season in Olds Elementary School, Deer Meadow School, and Holy Trinity School.
She noted that outreach concerts have been presented in the past.
“The concerts we present are enjoyed by the students and we have full cooperation from the schools," Thompson wrote.
“Your contributions are used specifically to offset a portion of the costs for the school concerts and the Town of Olds is acknowledged as the sponsor at each of the school concerts.”
Community services director Doug Wagstaff said this is a new request.
He said the town has previously granted $1,000 to help sponsor the Kiwanis Music Festival, but the request to help sponsor the music concert series is new.
Coun. Heather Ryan wondered if there was enough money in the town’s budget to cover the request.
Wagstaff said there was because at the time of discussion, the town had spent $3,800 of its $6,000 sponsorship budget.
