OLDS — The Town of Olds has paid tribute to the late Terry Dodd, a longtime volunteer firefighter and former fire chief.
Dodd, 88, passed away Feb. 13. He was born and raised in Olds. He ran his own electrical business for many years and later served as an electrician at Olds College.
Current Olds Fire Department Chief Justin Andrew gave a tribute to Dodd during a recent town council meeting.
Dodd served as volunteer firefighter in Olds for more than 44 years, eventually rising to the rank of fire chief, a position he held from 1977 until 1988, Andrew said.
He noted one call Dodd responded to was the famous big fire in 1978 “which forever left its mark on our history.”
“Terry was instrumental in building the fire department from that day forward to provide the service that we are experiencing today,” Andrew said. “He was a tireless volunteer, dedicated community leader and a gentle presence anywhere he went.”
Andrew said Dodd was a Canadian Armed Forces veteran and remained an active member in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #105 “right up until his passing.”
He received several awards, including lifetime member and a meritorious service award. In 2020, Dodd received a Quilt of Valour recognizing his service to the country
“The Town of Olds and the Olds Fire Department gratefully acknowledge his service and pass our sincere condolences to Terry’s friends and family,” Andrew said.
