SMOKY SCENE — About 25 firefighters responded to this garage fire Sunday, March 18 at 5441 56 St. Two people home at the time escaped uninjured.

About 25 firefighters from three departments fought a fire at 5441 56 St. in Olds Sunday afternoon.

The fire was called in at 12:07 p.m. Fire Chief Justin Andrew says it took crews until about 6 p.m. to put out the blaze and begin investigating its cause.

Fire officials say no one was hurt. Two people in the home got out safely.

"A working smoke detector alerted them to the situation and allowed them to escape uninjured," Andrew said in a press release.

At press time, it was unclear if there were any animals inside as well.

“The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and is not deemed to be suspicious in nature,” Andrews said in the press release. “The loss estimate of this fire has yet to be determined, but will be extensive.”

“Upon arrival, crews found the attached garage of the home to be fully involved in flame with the fire spread to the roof of the home,” the press release said.

First responders began a defensive attack in order to stop the fire from spreading further than the garage and roof.

The damage done to the home was extensive, due to the fire spreading to the roof.

Firefighters say an adjacent home was also subject to damage due to radiant heat exposure, but that damage was limited to the exterior of the home.

Fire crews from Didsbury and Sundre were called in to help. In total, three engines, two support units and a command vehicle were on-scene.

The Olds Fire Department is reminding residents to check their smoke alarms on a regular basis to save lives.
