Holy Trinity Catholic School in Olds will be receiving two new modular classrooms (otherwise known as portables) for the 2018-19 school year.
They will be linked to the existing school and it’s expected they’ll be ready for operation shortly after school starts next fall, although principal Ken Meraw is hoping they’ll be in place earlier than that -- possibly by Labour Day.
Development permits for the classrooms have been submitted. Tenders for the work will go out this month.
Meraw and vice-principal Jayme Lock say there’s a big need for the extra classrooms because the school keeps growing.
“We usually grow anywhere between 20 and 40 kids a year, I would say,” Locke says.
“And 20’s a lot, because that would be a classroom,” Meraw says.
He says the school’s total student population is currently 280.
“With the continued growth we are seeing at Holy Trinity Catholic School, the addition of two modular classes will provide some much needed space to meet the learning needs of our students,” Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools trustee Sharla Heistad says.
Locke says when the school began, it was located in Uptowne, where the office of Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills MLA Nathan Cooper is now. The permanent school building was constructed in 2010.
Locke says when the school began in Uptowne, it had a total of 50 students.
“Then, for the next two years, it doubled in size every year. And then we’ve kind of levelled off,” she adds.
Students moved into the completed school at its current location, 6610 57 St., the following year.
“We’re definitely projected to keep growing,” Locke says.
