OLDS — RCMP have released the name of a suspect charged in connection with an incident of a man walking in town with a long barrel firearm in his hands.
Police say Sheldon Brent Niemeyer, 56, of Olds was brought before a justice of the peace April 12 in connection with the incident, which occurred in the east end of Olds the evening of April 11.
Niemeyer was charged with the following offences:
• one count of careless use/storage of a firearm
• four counts of possession of a firearm while unauthorized to have them
• one count of possession of prohibited ammunition while unauthorized
• two counts of resisting or obstructing a peace officer in the execution of his duties
Niemeyer was released by the justice of the peace on a $2,000 promise to pay with conditions he must abide by and is due in Didsbury provincial court on May 3.
At about 9 p.m. on April 11, police received a “priority complaint.”
They were asked to help a town peace officer deal with a man he had seen walking down the street in the area of 51st Street and 48th Avenue carrying a long barrel firearm in his hands.
“The peace officer ordered the male to stop and drop the gun,” Cpl. Courtney Harding of Olds RCMP wrote in a news release.
“The male refused to comply with the demands made by the peace officer. The male suspect then fled, running into a nearby residence, still in possession of the firearm,” she added.
Police eventually managed to arrest the suspect after obtaining a tele-warrant.
Harding said after Niemeyer was arrested, they seized "multiple firearms, including a loaded firearm and ammunition."
The incident was resolved by midnight and roads in the area, which had been cordoned off for the safety of the public, were re-opened at that point.
"Olds RCMP are thankful for the cooperation of the community as well as all assisting agencies which contributed to a peaceful resolution to this incident," Harding wrote.
