OLDS - Civic leaders from across central Alberta took to the walking track in the Ralph Klein Centre in Olds Wednesday to kick off Fall Prevention Month.

Council members from Olds, Innisfail, Sylvan Lake, Sundre, Bowden and Red Deer were expected to take part in Central Alberta Falls Prevention Coalition's annual awareness event Walk With the Mayors.

According to Alberta Health Services, which is a partner in the coalition, falls are the leading cause of injury and a significant public health issue across age groups and settings in Alberta.

In 2019, 161,539 Albertans visited emergency and urgent care and 18,702 Albertans were hospitalized due to a fall.

Falls happen at home, school, in recreation and leisure, sports, in the community, work and even on vacation, says AHS.
