Police said a Wimborne-area woman was scammed out of $36,000 when she applied online for a job in the U.S.

The 53-year-old woman applied for a job with a company called Beta Entry Solutions based in Washington state in September, police said.

When she was accepted for a position, the company allegedly told her it required her to send it $36,000 for the purchase of software and hardware.

The woman agreed to send the money through a Western Union wire transfer, police said, and she has not heard back from the company.

She reported the suspected fraud to the Olds RCMP on Nov. 5.

Staff Sgt. Joe Sangster, commander of the Olds RCMP detachment, said police are investigating the scam and information about the scam has been shared with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
