Commentary: Penhold moves forward after memorable year

penhold-news

Our community has grown to 3,563 people!

The Penhold Regional Multiplex has undergone some major modifications and is now running on solar power.

The solar project, made possible through a grant from the Province of Alberta, will see a cost savings to the town right from Year 1. The multiplex will also be experiencing lighting changes as all light fixtures are being switched to LED lighting.

This project is made possible through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) and the Recreation Energy Conservation (REC) grant. This is all part of a council-led strategy to reduce operating expenses in our town.

Penhold is now receiving high-speed internet dark fibre thanks in large part to Melcor Development. A plan is being worked on to service the entire town in the future. Halifax Close, Phase 2 of Oxford Landing, is underway and will consist of a townhouse complex totalling 35 units when completed.

Penhold continues to see growth, even in challenging economic times. We are building houses, attracting new businesses and watching our existing ones grow.

Phase 1 of Critters Corner, a new inclusive playground was completed on the south side of town, west of Waskasoo Avenue. The project was completed with 100 per cent of the cost coming from private donations and grants.

Council wishes to thank all of its local commercial and home-based businesses in the community.  We appreciate your presence and value your contribution to the town’s economic success.

With our Shop Local campaign we were able to bring about $40,000 into our community. Thank you to our Shop Local business partners and customers who participated.

We have launched our new website, www.townofpenhold.ca. It’s a great looking website and will make it easier for you to quickly find the information you’re looking for.

I would like to say a special thank you to our council group who all have worked so ardently for you over this past year. To our staff, we appreciate all you do to make Penhold a great community to live and play. Thank you!

From the mayor and council, best wishes for a very special Christmas season to you and your family!

Mike Yargeau is the mayor of the Town of Penhold.
