PENHOLD – You may soon be able to fish in Penhold.

Staff with the Town of Penhold recently attended an open house in Red Deer, hosted by Alberta Environment, to discuss the possibility of stocking with fish the town’s pond that is located next to the RV Park, just east of the Penhold Regional Multiplex.

“There are a lot of municipalities in Alberta that have recreational fishing ponds,” said Mike Yargeau, Penhold mayor. “This is something we’ve actually been looking at for quite a while. We were under the impression that it wasn’t an option in our pond, and now we’ve been told that actually it could be an option so we want to explore that.

“When we dug that pond we did make it deep enough to sustain fish,” he said. “This was something that we had hoped for and were planning for," added Yargeau.

The pond was built several years ago as part of the dike project in Penhold, noted Yargeau, adding that having a recreational fishing pond would be a great addition to the area and for families camping at the RV Park.

“It’d be awesome. We are a very young community and if we have a place in town where parents can take their kids to fish and teach them to fish in a fun place,” said Yargeau. “That’s why it’s been a goal of our recreation plan to have that as a stocked pond and eventually, when we have that area completed, there’ll be trails around it and you could really spend the day there as a family.”

Yargeau said the town has submitted an official written request to Alberta Environment to stock the pond with fish and is awaiting a reply.

Council has asked administration to follow up with Alberta Environment later this month.
