PENHOLD – Firefighters responded to a late afternoon vehicle fire, and then a crash just over two hours later while returning to the local fire hall.
Shortly after 5 p.m. on Sept. 29 members of the Penhold Fire Department were dispatched to a vehicle fire on Waskasoo Avenue, just south of Robinson Avenue.
Acting Fire Lieut. Bailey McKay said when firefighters arrived at the scene they discovered a SUV on fire in a ditch, with a grass fire spreading to a power pole.
“There was no one in the vehicle and we quickly put the grass fire out (and) used foam on the vehicle as the gas tank was feeding the fire,” said McKay.
Fire Chief Jim Pendergast said RCMP and local peace officers are investigating. He said there were no injuries from the blaze at the scene. Pendergast said Waskasoo Avenue was closed for about two hours.
And then just over two hours later at 7:15 p.m. Penhold firefighters responded to an incident at Waskasoo Avenue and Minto Street where a vehicle crashed against a light standard
McKay said firefighters were returning to the fire hall when they came upon the vehicle against the light pole, which had become dislodged and on the ground.
“We treated the driver until EMS arrived who checked the patient out and released (the driver),” said McKay.
Pendergast said Fortis came to the scene to ensure the pole was safe. He said firefighters remained on scene for about two hours.
RCMP and local peace officers are continuing their investigation, said Pendergast.
