In a couple of weeks 5th Avenue SW in Sundre is going to be completely paved and have water and sewer lines underneath.

Town of Sundre officials are spending $475,869, through grant funding, to AIC Construction Ltd. for the job.

“Fifth will be completely paved, it will have curb, gutter and asphalt on it and have the water and sewer lines underneath when it's done,” said Ron Baker, the town's director of operations.

The project involves the installation of approximately 220 metres of 200-mm water main and 250-mm wastewater main.

“Right now where 5th Avenue is, it's only on paper, there was never a real street there,” he explained.

“There was only a trail there so it was difficult for the developer in that area to do anything.”

The construction began about a month ago and should be completed in the next two to three weeks, he said. Currently, the water and sewer lines are in and the project is about halfway done.

“The pipes have been put in, now what we're going to do is put the curb gutter and asphalt on top,” he said.

“They haven't started the actual road itself but it's all cleared and the topsoils all stripped off and everything to put the pipes in.”

The town only owns half of 5th Avenue, he said, which connects 7th Street SW and 10th Street SW.

“Council decided to put in the part of 5th Avenue SW that we own,” he said.

“Half of that development is being paid for by the town and the other half is being paid for by the developer.”

The project was initially looked at within the last year and council approved the awarding of the project during the April 2 council meeting.

“Half of 5th Avenue is surveyed in and owned by the town, so we are doing the part that we own and then the developer, using the same guy, is just going to continue the street right onto 10th,” he explained.

“It will open up a bunch more lots in the industrial park.”
